Eligibility for Benefits
Associate Eligibility
You are eligible to enroll in CHOC benefits plans if you are a Full-Time associate or a Part-Time associate scheduled to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Coverage is effective for a newly hired associate the first of the month following 30 days of employment. For associates who transfer to a benefit-eligible position, coverage changes are effective the first of the month following the transfer.
Dependent Eligibility
The following dependents are eligible for coverage:
- Legal Spouse
- California Registered Domestic Partners
- Children including biological, adopted, step-children, children of an eligible Domestic Partner, and any other children for whom you are a legal guardian up to age 26
- Children over age 26 if incapable of self-care and legally dependent
Adding dependents is subject to eligibility verification and the following documentation must be provided when you enroll your dependents:
- Marriage Certificate when adding a spouse
- California Form SF-DP1 when adding a domestic partner
- Birth Certificate or legal guardianship court documents when adding children
ACA Coverage
The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) (more commonly known as Obama Care) specifically requires companies to provide medical coverage to workers if the employee works on average either a) 30 hours or more per week or b) 130 hours per month in a specifically defined “look back period”. CHOC’s look back period is October 1 – September 31.
If an associate’s employment status changes to a position where they are no longer benefits-eligible, all benefits coverages will cease except if enrolled in a medical plan. If the associate qualifies for medical coverage continuation under the ACA, the associate will remain on the medical plan through the end of the calendar year, unless they cancel coverage in Workday. The associate may also be eligible to enroll in medical coverage for the following calendar year during annual open enrollment if they meet the eligibility criteria described in the paragraph above.
